アルトビール
Placing hop-derived bitterness in a medium-to-strong range while requiring astringency to be low or absent, this judging style for Düsseldorf's top-fermenting, cold-matured beer (BJCP 2021) also weighs balance against malt richness, with a 25–50 IBU guideline.

Reading the bitterness
Altbier is a style characterized by Düsseldorf top fermentation and cold maturation. Its judging IBU guideline is 25–50, but the description also includes balance with malt richness. Representing the style solely by the numerical upper bound would lose the combined assessment of malt and bitterness.
Altbier judging seeks medium-to-strong hop bitterness while keeping astringency low or absent. Distinct bitterness and strong oral astringency are not the same evaluation. Distinguishing the terms helps read this difference.
Altbier is a style where the wording of the two guidelines line up closely. The Brewers Association (BA) 2025 edition describes bitterness as "Medium to high, producing a clean dry finish." and BJCP likewise balances medium-to-strong hop bitterness against rich malt, with astringency kept low or absent. The IBU range also largely overlaps, at 25-52 for BA and 25–50 for BJCP. That the numbers and words line up means the judging guidelines agree with each other; it does not mean the measured bitterness of individual products lines up.
