Reading the bitterness

The Brewers Association’s 2025 style guidelines specify Hop Bitterness (IBU) of 4–10 and Perceived bitterness of "Absent to very low" for the American lager category "American-Style Light Lager".

By contrast, the 2021 style guidelines of another organization, the BJCP, used in competitions and elsewhere, give an IBU range of 8–12 for the same American Light Lager (category 1A) and state in the flavor section: "Low to very low bitterness. Balance may vary from slightly malty to slightly bitter, but is usually close to even." The IBU ranges differ between the Brewers Association’s 4–10 and BJCP’s 8–12, but both place perceived bitterness at a low level.

These are self-reported style specifications from trade and competition bodies, revised annually, not measurements of commercial brands themselves. The guidelines also note elsewhere that IBU values and perceived bitterness may diverge.
