Reading the bitterness

Tereré is a drink described as originating in Indigenous Guaraní culture. It is prepared by mixing cold water with pohã ñana (medicinal plants) crushed in a mortar. Like mate, it is served in the same type of vessel and drunk through a bombilla (drinking straw). This description comes from Paraguay's UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage nomination; it is not quantitative evidence of regional or generational differences.

In December 2020, tereré was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the name 『pohã ñanaの文化におけるtereréの伝統的実践と知識、パラグアイの祖先由来のグアラニー飲料』 (in translation: "Traditional practices and knowledge of tereré in the culture of pohã ñana, an ancestral Guaraní drink in Paraguay"). The nomination says that preparation follows a predetermined sequence of practices, and describes the time and space in which tereré is consumed as fostering social cohesion, inclusion, friendship, dialogue, respect, and solidarity. This is Paraguay's own nomination text, not an account independently verified by a third party.

The UNESCO nomination says that traditional practical knowledge concerning tereré has been passed on within Paraguayan families since at least the 16th century. However, it does not set out in detail the historical sources supporting that starting point.
