Fruit beer (BJCP style category)

concept / concept-fruit-beer-style

フルーツビール

Without setting a uniform number such as IBU, and treating it according to the base beer instead, this judging category for beers combined with fruit (BJCP 2021, 29A) asks whether fruit character and bitterness are in harmony. Fruit Lambic is a separate category.

Reading the bitterness

Fruit Beer judging requires a description of the fruit and base beer. There is no IBU range common to all examples; numbers depend on the base beer. The name 「果実入り」 (in translation: "containing fruit") alone cannot establish whether bitterness is strong or weak. This category is read through both fruit and base.

Fruit Beer bitterness is judged by whether it harmonizes with fruit character. The beer after fruit addition need not be identical in every property to the base beer. Fruit Lambic is also a separate category. The scope here and each base style need to be stated explicitly.

For fruit beer, the two guidelines diverge on whether to give a numeric range at all. BJCP's 29A sets no common range for numbers such as IBU, and instead asks for bitterness that fits the base style and harmonizes with the fruit. The Brewers Association (BA) 2025 edition's American-Style Fruit Beer gives bitterness as "In balance with fruit character and usually at very low to medium levels" and assigns IBU a range of 5-70. The two share the idea of deciding bitterness by its balance with the fruit, but BA's range is wide, and the numbers cannot narrow down the bitterness called for in this style.
