chanoyuAccording to a class website run by Omotesenke instructor 「藤本薫里」 (Fujimoto Kaori), at a formal tea gathering guests are described as eating the principal sweet after kaiseki, then moving to a renewed seating for thick tea. records: contextual

Scope: Omotesenke (description by an individual tea instructor); order of a formal tea gathering.

Note: This records the sequence, given by a school instructor’s site, of serving the sweet principal confection before bitter and astringent thick tea, as a matter of procedure and etiquette. Neither the site nor this claim includes an interpretation of its spiritual meaning or why sweetness comes first.

The site states 「懐石のあとに主菓子をいただき、その後、座を改めて静謐な空気の中、濃茶が振る舞われます」 (in translation: "After kaiseki, guests receive the principal sweet; then, after changing seats, thick tea is served in a tranquil atmosphere").
Limitations: The order in informal tea gatherings, such as gatherings serving only thin tea, has not been separately checked.
