コルドバ州

Córdoba (Argentina) is a province in central Argentina and its namesake capital city. It is described as one area with a concentrated Italian immigrant population and is repeatedly mentioned in academic and news sources as the setting for one account of the origin of Fernet con coca and as the area where Fernet consumption is most concentrated within Argentina.

Reading the bitterness

Córdoba in central Argentina is repeatedly mentioned in academic and news sources as one setting for an account of the origin of Fernet con coca, a combination of Fernet and cola. A 2018 thesis states that it established the connection with the province’s extensive Italian immigrant community and how the combination became established there. A 2020 article states 『Córdoba capital, ciudad líder en consumo de Fernet en la Argentina(コルドバ市はアルゼンチンにおけるフェルネット消費のリード都市)』 (in translation: "Córdoba city, the leading city for Fernet consumption in Argentina"), but provides no numerical support for this statement.

Concrete figures indicating concentrated consumption in Córdoba Province have also been reported. A 2015 article, citing Kantar Worldpanel data from 2013, reports that Córdoba and neighboring cities account for about a third of Fernet consumption in Argentina, while the province accounts for only about 8% of the country’s population. The description emphasizes the marked disparity between consumption and population share, but it comes through a news article; the primary Kantar Worldpanel report itself was not checked in this research.

Córdoba (Argentina) — reported consumption share: fernetcontextual

Scope: Argentina (Córdoba Province)

Note: Córdoba Province accounts for only about 8% of Argentina's population, but news reports state that it accounts for about a third of domestic fernet consumption (citing 2013 Kantar Worldpanel data, via a 2015 news article). The disproportion relative to population share is emphasized.

Confirmed both statements: 『コルドバとその周辺都市がアルゼンチンにおける同酒類消費の3分の1を担う』 (in translation: "Córdoba and its surrounding cities account for a third of this spirit's consumption in Argentina") and 『コルドバは国内人口の8%に過ぎない』 (in translation: "Córdoba is only 8% of the national population"). Kantar Worldpanel (2013) is explicitly cited as the source.
Limitations: Mediated through a news article. Kantar Worldpanel's primary report itself was not checked. The article gives no explanation of the exact method used to calculate the percentage.
