Reading the bitterness
According to Gruppo Montenegro's official history, Amaro Montenegro is described as deriving from Elisir Lungavita, one of the products made after 「若き錬金術師」 (in translation: "young alchemist") Stanislao Cobianchi established a distillery in Bologna in 1885. According to the regional U.S. official site, 11 years after its creation the drink was renamed Amaro Montenegro to commemorate the marriage of Princess Elena of Montenegro to Italy's Crown Prince Victor Emmanuel (later Victor Emmanuel III). Both are company accounts, not descriptions independently verified by a third party.
The bottle label reads 「LIQUORE OTTENUTO DA 40 ERBE AROMATICHE ACCURATAMENTE SELEZIONATE SECONDO UNA RICETTA SEGRETA(40種の厳選された芳香ハーブから、秘伝のレシピに従って得られたリキュール)」 (in translation: "Liqueur obtained from 40 carefully selected aromatic herbs according to a secret recipe") and gives an alcohol content of 23% Alc/Vol. The official U.S. site discloses only 13 of these 40 plants, grouped into 3 families—citrus, spices, and herbs—leaving the other 27 undisclosed. Within the site text examined (approximately 3,600 characters), the word 「bitter(苦い)」 (in translation: "bitter") does not occur even once.
According to the same site's account, 12 essential oils remain after boiling, maceration, and distillation of the ingredients; a master herbalist blends them into 「6つのノート」 (in translation: "six notes"). In the final step, 「イル・プレミオ(Il Premio、イタリア語で『賞』の意)」 (in translation: "Il Premio, Italian for 'prize'"), an additive redistilled from 5 ingredients is added. Only 1 liter of Premio is described as needed for 15,000 liters of Amaro Montenegro; specific processing conditions such as temperatures and times are not disclosed.

Note: In light of the lesson from the misattributed invented figures 『40種以上のハーブ・6か月熟成』 (in translation: "more than 40 herbs and six months of aging") for Unicum uncovered previously, this wording was verified directly from the bottle label as a primary source, not from an article on the company's official website.

Note: Only 13 of the 40 botanicals are disclosed; the remaining 27 are not. The list itself — which 13 — is not shown on this page. Following the lesson from an earlier collection's Unicum misattribution, we have not adopted the specific botanical names listed in other, non-official sources this time.

Note: The simple addition 1885+11=1896 is inferred from the phrase 『11年後』 (in translation: "11 years later"); amaromontenegro.us itself does not explicitly give 『1896年』 (in translation: "the year 1896"). The conversion to a calendar year is our arithmetic.
